About Special Education in Northwest ISD

Northwest ISD serves the Texas area, providing a comprehensive range of special education services to students with disabilities. The district operates under the oversight of TEA Region unknown, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.

The Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) process in Northwest ISD follows a specific timeline. After parental consent for a Full and Individual Evaluation (FIE) is received, the district has approximately 45 school days to complete the evaluation. Once the FIE is complete, parents will receive at least a 5-day written notice prior to the ARD meeting.

Common Questions from Northwest ISD Families

My child's teacher says they might need special education. What happens next?

If your child's teacher suspects a disability, they will likely discuss their concerns with you and the school's Response to Intervention (RTI) team. This team may implement interventions to support your child's learning. If these interventions are not sufficient, the team may recommend a referral for a Full and Individual Evaluation (FIE) to determine eligibility for special education services.

What kind of support services are available for my child in Northwest ISD?

Northwest ISD offers a variety of special education services, including specialized instruction, speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, counseling, and assistive technology, depending on your child's individual needs as determined by the ARD committee. These services are designed to support your child's access to the general education curriculum and help them achieve their full potential.

How often will my child's ARD committee meet?

Your child's ARD committee will meet at least annually to review your child's Individualized Education Program (IEP) and progress. However, you can request an ARD meeting at any time if you have concerns about your child's education or if you believe changes to their IEP are necessary. Don't hesitate to reach out to the school to schedule a meeting.

Tip for Northwest ISD Parents

Navigating special education in a district with approximately 10,000 students, like Northwest ISD, can sometimes feel overwhelming. Smaller districts often have one Special Education Director overseeing everything. To ensure your concerns are addressed and documented, it's often more effective to communicate via email rather than phone. This creates a paper trail of your conversations and requests, providing a record of communication with the district.
